I wanted to create something with perspective and depth but also interactive for the user to use. By wanting to create a simple but effective installation, I had to find the most afforable technology for myself to be able to experiment with. The wii remote is the perfect device for experimental projects that need an infrared camera.
Johnny Chung Lee, a student at Carnegie Mellon University, who is famous for his experimental projects with the wii remote, has a project that deals with head tracking. Using his project as my inspiration, I decided to expand on his project for the interaction between my 3d space and user on an artist level.
This project will entail a personal and individual experience with perspective and depth in a virtual world. Using 2D and 3D objects, We will create a visualization that is both realistic and abstract. Using head tracking technology, it will create a real-time 3d perspective that will appear to be escaping from the screen itself.
Looking into the future with head (face) tracking, maybe this will be another portal into how we view visuals on digital screens. This can create an unique experience between the user and the screen. When we thought we have already achieved interaction with Flash, head tracking can be the technology that connects us even more to the virtual world. What if head tracking could be used in real-time? The user would be able to choose what they want to see, so then now they have a choice, taking away some control from our flat screens.
